FAQs
Q: How much time will I need to give?
A: You can give as much or as little time as you want. Help from volunteers is needed at different times. You could volunteer during the day, in the evenings or at weekends. Some people help for a long period of time others for just a few months. Let us know what suits you.
Q: Will my travel expenses by paid?
A: Most groups will pay your travel expenses. We can give you more information about this.
Q: Will my state benefits be affected?
A: If you are receiving benefits these should not be affected by volunteering. Please tell us your situation and we can talk to you about this.
Q: Will there be an interview?
A: Most groups arrange to see you. This should be a two way process which enables you to find out more about the group and the group to find out more about you.
Q: What about references and police checks?
A: Some organisations will ask you to give the name of someone who can provide a character reference. If you are going to volunteer with children or vulnerable adults they may carry out a police check. But having a criminal record does not automatically prevent you from volunteering. Please let us know as much detail as you can about any spent or unspent convictions.
Q: What support will I be given?
A: Trying anything new can be nerve racking! If you would like some support to help you get started we can talk about this when you visit us. Groups will provide training for some volunteer roles.
Q: Where do I start?
A: Our advisors will talk to you about what you want to do, your reasons for volunteering, your needs and any concerns that you have. They will give you choices from the many volunteering opportunities we know about.
