Other people's volunteering

Maya

Maya is in her early 50's and currently unemployed.  She was referred to the volunteering centre from the local drug and alcohol advice service as she is recovering from an addiction.  It has been suggested to her that volunteering might be a good occupational therapy and an advisor gave her information about a local charity shop where she might be able to volunteer.  Maya telephoned the shop herself to ask if they needed people and the advisor was delighted to receive information that she is now happily volunteering.  Maya said that she felt very lucky to have had someone believe that she had something to offer the local community.

Steve

Steve is a studying on a full time degree course and is interested in volunteering as he thinks it will help him to gain valuable experience to put on his CV and also because he wants to get more involved in the local community.  He only has limited time to give as he also needs to work at his part-time job and wants to be able to spend time with his friends.  By searching the volunteering centre database an advisor was able to suggest a number of charities where Steve could volunteer, either on his own or with his friends.  Steve was also referred to other groups who organise volunteering activities specifically for students in his situation.
